 Village circuit, Sutton This 4 kilometer walking tour allows you to discover the charm, history and architecture of Sutton. First settled by Loyalists in 1802 the route is marked by 16 interpretive panels. Allow about an hour, or a little more, to discover the richness of the community and its heritage.
- Rural Circuit
 McClarty Homestead, Sutton The 33 kilometer circuit links 10 sites in Sutton and Abercorn including important historical buildings such as the McClarty homestead built in 1842 by Irish pioneers.Ideal for the cyclist or driver take the time to stop at the interpretive panels and the numerous panoramic viewpoints.
- Churches and Cemetery Circuit
Visit the churches and cemeteries where the pioneers and founders of Sutton and district worshipped and were laid to rest.The entire tour, consisting of 2 loops, takes you through some of the most picturesque countryside we have to offer. Baptist Church, Sutton Loop 1 : Starts in Sutton and takes in Sutton Junction, Brome, West Brome and North Sutton. About 45 kilometers with 15 interpretive panels. Loop 2 : Continues from Sutton and goes south through Abercorn and Glen Sutton. Aproximately 54 kilometers with 7 interpretive panels. In the heart of the village,at the starting point of the historical Village Circuit, is the Sutton Historical Society. Located in the old Billings stables (1806), the museum was founded in 1963 by Edmund Eberdt and donated to the town of Sutton in 1999. Under the theme “communications’ the museum will transport you back in time from the establishment of the postal service, the arrival of trains and the telegraph to the telephone, radio and cinema. The museum also has a hall reserved for special exhibits relating to the history of Sutton or communications. For information: (450) 538-3222. This signposted route highlights the architectural and natural heritage of the Eastern Townships. Along the 415-km trail, the opportunity to visit Sutton along with 30 other municipalities is offered with 27 suggested stops along the route and 8 stops just slightly off the path.
The American and British influences are the distinguishing characteristics of the local heritage of the Eastern Townships. The Townships Trail invites you to follow in the steps of the American, Loyalist, Scottish and Irish settlers who first colonized the area in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Local heritage is prominently displayed in the architecture: the homes, the churches of different denominations, the round barns, the covered bridges, the general stores, the village squares, and so on. Interpretation centres, museums, heritage trails and numerous activities will allow visitors to link the past to the present.
Here in Sutton our heritage buildings include : the Baptist Church, the former Methodist (now United) Church, the Town Hall and the Boright & Safford general store which now houses the favorite food store of many locals and visitors, the renowned La Rumeur Affamée. In order to better discover the Townships Trail you can obtain a roadmap as well as a triple compact disc package which tells the story of the areas being visited along the trail.
